Nigel Rolfe

Nigel Rolfe (f.1950) är känd som en inflytelserik person inom performancekonsten. Han kommer från Isle of Wight, men bor och arbetar i Dublin, Irland sedan en lång tid tillbaka. Rolfe studerade skulptur på 1970-talet och använde termen ”Skulptur i rörelse” för att beskriva sitt arbete där material förändras under tid —långt före termen performance var etablerat som begrepp. Rolfe har en omfattande produktion bakom sig, och har gjort ett betydande internationellt avtryck som konstnär, curator aktivist och lärare. På senare tid har hans konstnärskap rört sig mot fotografi och video, även om han oftast använder sig av bilder som är sammanlänkade med hans performancekonst eller specifika objekt vilka har fungerat som rekvisita. Rolfe använder sin egen kropp som en plats för övergrepp. På detta sätt skapar han både empati och ett förfrämligande. Hans konstnärskap har visats i omfattande retrospektiva utställningar på the Irish Museum Of Modern Art i Dublin och Musee D’Art Moderne de la Ville De Paris. Han har ställt ut i Dublin, Paris, Sao Paulo, Busan, Kwangju och på Venedigbiennalen.

Nigel Rolfe (b.1950) is recognized as a seminal figure in performance art. Originally from Isle of Wight, Rolfe has lived and worked in Dublin, Ireland for many years. He studied sculpture and in the 1970’s used the term ”Sculptures In Motion” to describe his work using materials across time—long before the term performance was used. Rolfe has worked intensively and made significant international contributions as an artist, curator, activist and scholar. More recently he is moving into photography and video, though nearly always trading in images relating to his performance work, or to specific objects used in his performances. Rolfe uses the artist’s body as the site of assault, the impact to create empathy and at the same time estrangement. Major retrospectives of his work have been held at the Irish Museum Of Modern Art in Dublin and at the Musee D’Art Moderne de la Ville De Paris. He has exhibited in Dublin, Paris, Sao Paulo, Busan, Kwangju and at the Venice Biennales.
